Replacing a broken sliding glass door can cost up to $550, but there are many factors that go into this cost.

If you don’t want to spend that much to repair your door, you can always try and fix it on your own.

Keep reading to learn about how to fix a broken glass door and what to do if you need the help of a professional!

Gather Tools and Materials

First, you’ll need to gather materials to repair the door. This includes getting a putty knife or scraper, razor blade scraper, and safety glasses or gloves.

You may also need to get a heat gun, paint, chisel, and a glazing compound if you have a glass window that is glazed.

However, if you don’t have this equipment or don’t feel like you can do this safely, always make sure that you call an expert.

Remove Glass Insert

If the glass insert is broken or cracked, you’ll have to remove that from the door frame. The glass is normally held in place with a wood stop, and you’ll see nails on one side of the door to hold those stops in place.

When you replace the glass, make sure that you’re working on the side of the door where you can see the nails. To remove the glass, you’ll have to use the putty knife to get all of the old caulk that holds the stops in place.

When you remove the caulk, pry the stops away from the door. When the stops are loose, you can remove them and the nails as well. However, don’t throw them away because you may be able to reuse them.

Now, you should be able to get to the class and remove it. If it’s cracked, be careful because it could be sharp. Make sure that you get rid of all of the pieces.

Install New Glass

The ability to repair the current glass will depend on how big the crack was. But in general, you’ll likely have to replace it with a new piece of glass. You can keep the original door frame though.

To install the new glass, you will need something to rest it on, like sawhorses. You can then put the outer frame with the glass over the sawhorses.

To make sure that you install it correctly, make sure that the temper stamp is on the bottom of the door. Lay the door over the glass, being careful not to break the glass.

Now, you can take your wooden stops and small nails that you saved from the last door and put them in place to fasten the wood stops.
